Khmer

This is a palm beer, so it isn’t a true beer. I tried it, nonetheless. It sucks. It could never be quaffed – maybe taken in a shot like a bad medicine; but not quaffed.

I poured it down the sink after a handful of tastes, taken in an effort to identify the industrial solvent of which it reminds me. Jen didn’t get past the smell emitted from the bottle.

Angkor Beer

It’s your standard light beer, along the lines of BeerLao. Nothing great here – just tolerable. It should be poured down the sink. Unfortunately, it’s the most popular beer in Cambodia.

Angkor Extra Stout

There are good stouts and there are bad stouts, with the latter category often distinguished by a failure to balance maltiness with hops bitterness (which results in an excessively sweet beer). That’s the problem with Angkor Extra Stout: it is too sweet.

It should be poured down the sink.

Anchor Beer

This is a pilsner made in Cambodia under license from Asia Pacific Breweries, Ltd. The tagline under the name is, “Smooth.”

It’s a light-bodied shit beer, like most all others in SE Asia. Reminds me of Old Milwaukee, Milwaukee’s Best, and all that other $2.50-a-six-pack crap beer I drank as a poor college student.

But, as things would have, this is the beer we least dislike in Cambodia. After Angkor Beer, it’s the most prevalent beer in Cambodia.

It should still be poured down the sink, and the sink then sterilized with bleach.

So, is there a truly drinkable beer in Cambodia? No.
