Today, we drove to Hana. From where we are saying, the Huelo Point Lookout, it is 34 miles. This translates to about an hour and a half of sheer driving. Throw in stops for photos and such, and it translates into three or more hours.

The road to Hana is not as daunting as it was when I first drove it in the mid-80’s. I seem to recall lots of one lane, poor paving, no guard rails, and the need to honk at every hairpin turn as a warning to oncoming traffic.

Perhaps time has magnifies the challenge.

Either way, today the drive is on well-paved roadway, with lots of two-way, lots of guardrail, and not much honking.

But it is still a worthwhile drive, just for the scenery.

We stopped several times, and I think Jen managed some good shots.

In Hana, we had lunch at the restaurant in the Hotel Hana. No specifically vegan or vegetarian options (other than hummus or guacamole appetizers), so we we had pizza and black bean quesadillas, stripped of milk products. Overall, an unremarkable meal. But that might bevas good as it gets in Hana, based upon web reviews we’ve seen.

From there, we walked around for a while. Jen took ae photos at a church and cemetery, and at Hana Bay.

We also walked a dirt path around the south side of a hilly point that is at the south end of Hana Bay. This leads to a small cove, much of which is protected from the breaking waves by a lava wall. It also has a small beach. There were several people swimming and snorkeling and sunbathing. From
About a hundred yards, it looked to
jen like one older guy was wearing a tiny speedo. On closer examination – but much closer – it was something other than a tiny speedo that was being exposed.

So, there’s a bit of nudist beach in Hana, it seams.

On the drive back, we stopped at the Hana Lava Cave. It’s like a subway tunnel, only different. Costs $12.50 each for the ride.
