DCIM100GOPROGOPR1229.JPGThe South Sea Hotel is located on the waterfront of Half Moon Bay. It has a main building with restaurant and bar on the first floor, and hotel rooms on the upper floor. There are two additional building landward, one with rooms that share a bathroom, and another with rooms that have kitchenettes and en suite bathrooms.

We stayed in one of the rooms with an en suite bathroom and kitchenette. These are called studio motel units on the hotel’s web site. It cost us NZ $170 a night.

The room had two beds — a queen-sized and a twin. It also had a table and chairs, a television, and night stands. The kitchenette had a single countertop with sink, a small refrigerator, and a microwave. The bathroom had a toilet, shower, and sink. The room and furnishings were basic, but clean and maintained. Occasionally, some door noise carried from adjacent rooms.

The hotel has a restaurant and bar that are popular with visitors and locals. We ate here throughout our stay The food was good, and the portions were decent. Prices ran about 40% higher than the main, south island.

We have no criticisms of South Sea Hotel. It is a decent place for a reasonable price.
