Drink

Both of us love beer.

In fact, I knew Jen was the girl for me when, on our first date, she ordered an Anchor Steam…and then told me that it was actually her second favorite, Guinness being at the top of the list (but unfortunately not vegan-friendly). A woman who knows Guinness from Anchor Steam is a novelty. A woman who actually drinks them is a keeper.

One of our missions on our travels is to sample the local brews, and this is where we tell you about them.

We have a simple, three-level rating system. At the top is, “Buy It, Drink It.” In the middle is, “Drink It if There is Nothing Better in the Fridge.” At the bottom is, “Pour It Down the Sink.” I reckon they are self-explanatory.

Singha and Chang Beer, Thailand

Singha and Chang Beer, Thailand

There are two main beers in Thailand – Singha and Chang. Ok…there’s Leo and Heineken available, but they aren’t as pervasive. So, back to the main two… Both beers have more commonalities than differences.  They are both lager in appearance, meaning they are clear in color. They are both light bodied. They taste almost…almost…the same. However, there is a slight […]

Ranger IPA

Ranger IPA

Ranger IPA is brewed by New Belgium Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. It has the characteristic taste, color, and bitterness of an IPA. A good representation of the style. It also has a good head of foam that grabs the sides of the glass and sticks around to the end. Only thing I would like is more hoppiness to the […]

Lagunitas IPA

Lagunitas IPA

This IPA is brewed by the Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, California. It has the taste and bitterness characteristic of IPAs. The one thing it lacks that I really appreciate is a hoppy aroma. There really isn’t much, if any, of that. Nonetheless, it’s a decent IPA. On our ranking systems, it scores a “Drink if There is Nothing Better […]

Koshihikari Echigo Beer

Koshihikari Echigo Beer

We tried this beer at a local sushi restaurant in Kailua.  It was listed as a premium Japanese beer, and priced accordingly ($9 a bottle). Well, this must be made by the Japanese branch of Schlitz brewing, ’cause that’s pretty much what it tastes like. For those that have tried — or suffered — through a can of Schlitz, you […]

Mana Wheat by the Maui Brewing Company

Mana Wheat by the Maui Brewing Company

Mana Wheat by the Maui Brewing Company is a hefeweizen made with pineapple juice. I don’t really care much for lambics and such in general, but we tried it. Well, I still don’t much care for beers with fruit added. Jen tried this beer and agrees. If you are one of those who does like lambics, you still might want […]

Hawai'i Nui Brewing: Sunset Amber Ale

Hawai’i Nui Brewing: Sunset Amber Ale

Hawai’i Nui brewing is located in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Their beers can be found in some of the stores here on Oahu. The two beers I have seen are their Sunset Amber Ale and Kaua’i Golden Ale. Right now, I am having a go at the Sunset Amber Ale. They say it’s a medium bodied brew, […]

Maui Brewing Company: Big Swell IPA

Maui Brewing Company: Big Swell IPA

Big Swell IPA is made by a Maui brewer.  It’s a solid IPA — full bodied, hoppy, bitter with a bite but not overly done.  Costs about $10 a six-pack at the local stores.  One of my standard beer purchases.  I like this stuff. A unique thing about this beer is that it comes in cans instead of bottles.  When […]
